Once Human is a free open world survival game with a twist. It shoots like a looter shooter, it runs on seasonal servers that wipe your world on a schedule, and it lets you keep certain permanent progress across those wipes. That combination trips up newcomers who treat it like a survival game they will live in forever, then panic the first time a season ends. Get the season loop straight early and everything else falls into place. This guide covers survival basics, where to put your base, your first real weapon build, and what actually carries over.

Day to day you are managing hunger, thirst and sanity while gathering, crafting, building and fighting mutated enemies called Deviants plus the bosses that gate your progress. The Memetics tree is your blueprint system for the current season, while your account unlocks stay with you between seasons. That split is the thing to understand if you want to play efficiently.

Survival Fundamentals

Before you optimize a single thing, keep your character alive and functional.

  • Watch hunger, thirst and sanity, but do not overthink food yet. Cook simple meals for stat buffs and keep water on you. Sanity drains in contaminated and dangerous zones, so carry a way to restore it and stay out of Hazard areas longer than the run actually needs.
  • Loot everything at first, then get picky. Early on you need raw materials for building and crafting. Once the base runs itself, focus on weapon and armor mats, blueprint fragments and controller or energy links instead of clutter.
  • Deconstruct, do not discard. Breaking down gear you do not want returns materials and mods. That beats dropping items almost every time.
  • Manage contamination on purpose. Contaminated zones chip your health and drain sanity, but they hold the best loot. Bring gear with contamination resistance and know your limit before you push into a Hazard region.

Base Building: Location First, Decor Later

Your base is a production engine before it is anything else. New players sink hours into a pretty build in a bad spot. Flip that order.

  • Build near water and resource nodes. You will always need water, wood, stone and ore. Sitting next to them saves a staggering amount of travel. Being close to a Teleport point is worth a lot too.
  • Function first: benches, farm plots, power. Get the key stations up before you decorate, meaning weapon and gear benches, cooking, and a controller for automation. Automated gathering through Deviants and machines is what buys you time to actually go explore.
  • Put your Deviants to work. They are not only combat pets. Plenty of them produce food, materials or buffs once you assign them to base facilities. Capturing production Deviants early is one of the biggest boosts your economy gets.
  • You can move later. The whole base packs up and relocates, so do not agonize over your first spot. Put something functional down now and pick a better location once you know the map.

Combat and Your First Weapon Build

Combat is where Once Human pulls away from ordinary survival games. Damage comes from a weapon plus a build that agrees with itself, not from finding a bigger gun.

  • Commit to one damage type early. Builds run on synergies: status effects like Bull's Eye, Shrapnel and Fast Gunner, or elemental damage like Burn and Bounce. Pick a lane, then stack the mods, calibrations and gear that feed it instead of spreading yourself thin.
  • Bull's Eye and Shrapnel are the friendly starting points. They forgive mistakes, they scale, and they do not demand perfect aim, which makes either one a solid first build while you learn the deeper systems.
  • Match your armor set to your build. Sets grant bonuses that amplify a specific playstyle, whether that is crit, status or elemental. Wearing a full matching set is a larger damage jump than most people expect, so stop running mismatched pieces.
  • Hit weak points and lean on Deviant effects. Headshots and status procs melt enemies far faster than raw volume of fire. Learn each boss pattern, because these fights are as much a puzzle as a damage race.

Playing the Season Loop

This is the part that trips up almost everyone. Once Human runs in seasons, with phases inside each one. When a season closes, your world and the progress tied to that season reset. That is intentional, and plenty of things do carry forward.

  • Know exactly what persists. Account unlocks, cosmetics, storage in Eternaland (your permanent private space) and certain currencies survive the rollover. Season Memetics blueprints and the base you built usually do not.
  • Stash your keepers in Eternaland before the reset. Move the gear, materials and formulas you care about into your permanent space ahead of time so the next season starts with a head start instead of nothing.
  • Follow the phase objectives. Each phase points you at specific bosses and unlocks. Riding the seasonal roadmap keeps your power curve level with the content rather than trailing behind it.
  • Do not hoard as the season closes. Spend your season currency and consumables while they still exist, because they will not follow you.

Once Human pays back players who work with its rhythm. Survive the basics, put a functional base near resources, commit to one coherent weapon build, and treat every season as a fresh sprint stacked on top of permanent account growth. Get those four right and the grind stops feeling like a treadmill and starts feeling like progression worth repeating.
