Rise of Kingdoms is Lilith Games' enormous realtime 4X: one seamless world map, eleven historical civilizations, dozens of commanders pulled from history, and a war economy that keeps ticking 24/7 whether you are logged in or not. The trap is that it is very easy to play badly. The early game is forgiving enough that you can cripple your account for weeks and never feel it happening. This guide sticks to the decisions that actually shape where you end up: your civilization, your commanders, your resource discipline, and your alliance.
Pick a Civilization You Actually Want to Play
Your first real call is your civilization. You can switch later, but the one you start with sets the tone for your opening weeks. Every civ carries passive bonuses and a unique starting commander. For a fresh account, three stand out:
- Rome. Its commander Scipio Africanus gives you a strong all round foundation and is one of the best free early picks in the game.
- Germany. Action point recovery bonuses that let you do more things per day, which suits players who log in often.
- China. A general economic and military boost that is very hard to misuse.
Do not agonize over squeezing the perfect civ out of day one. The bonuses matter far more once you reach the mid and late game, and you can migrate civilizations later anyway. Pick the one whose starting commander and playstyle you actually enjoy.
Commanders Win Your Battles, Not Buildings
In Rise of Kingdoms, your commanders decide fights. Your buildings do not. This is where new players burn the most resources, so get these four rules in your head early:
- Do not spread sculptures thin. Commander upgrade materials, the sculptures, are scarce. Drip a few into a dozen commanders and you end up with a roster of weaklings. Back a small core instead.
- Learn the roles. Commanders specialize by troop type (Infantry, Cavalry, Archers) and by job (open field combat, rallying and attacking cities, peacekeeping and farming barbarians). Build for the job you need most right now.
- Peacekeeping commanders come first. On a new account, a strong peacekeeper such as Sun Tzu or Boudica farms barbarians efficiently, which levels your other commanders and feeds your economy. It is the safest early investment there is.
- Pair them properly. Two commanders lead a march together. Look up the strong pairings for your troop type instead of shoving two random names into the slots.
If one line from this section sticks, make it this: choose three or four commanders and pour everything into them. A focused roster beats a scattered one every single time.
Grow the City Without Stalling Out
City upgrades follow a dependency chain, and pushing your City Hall out ahead of your economy is the classic beginner mistake.
- Keep buildings level with your City Hall. Resource buildings, the Academy for research, and your troop training buildings should climb alongside the City Hall rather than trailing behind it.
- Always be researching. The Academy stacks permanent upgrades to your economy and military. Never leave it sitting idle.
- Always be building. Queue your longest construction and research timers before you log off so the account keeps working overnight.
- Clear daily quests and the "More Info" tasks. They are a steady, safe stream of resources, speedups, and commander XP.
- Hoard carefully. Resources in your bag cannot be raided. Resources sitting above your protected cap can. Spend as you earn and keep a buffer in the bag for big upgrades.
The target is not the tallest City Hall in the kingdom. It is a rounded city that can defend itself and keep producing while you are away.
Get Into an Active Alliance Early
Underneath the empire building, Rise of Kingdoms is a team game, and a good alliance is the biggest accelerator a new player can get hold of:
- Alliance help shaves time off every building and research timer. Join one and you will feel the difference inside a day.
- Alliance resource centers and territory give you protected farming and shared resources.
- Protection and coordination. A strong alliance deters attackers and opens up group content, gathering, and events you cannot touch alone.
- Knowledge. Active alliances are full of veterans who will tell you which commanders to build and which events deserve your speedups.
Skip the dead ones. An active, talkative alliance in a healthy kingdom is worth more than any single commander you could pull.
What Your First Week Should Look Like
- Pick a beginner friendly civ: Rome, Germany, or China.
- Commit to three or four commanders, starting with a strong peacekeeper for barbarian farming.
- Keep the City Hall, economy, and Academy moving together, and keep research running.
- Clear daily quests for speedups, resources, and commander XP.
- Join an active alliance straight away.
- Set long timers before logging off, and do not sit on loose resources.
Playing the Long Game
Rise of Kingdoms is a marathon. The players who do well are the ones who make disciplined calls early: one solid civilization, a tight core of properly built commanders, a balanced city, and an alliance that shows up. Resist the pull to rush your City Hall or collect a hundred half built commanders. Grow on purpose, lean on your alliance, and let the compounding systems do the heavy lifting. The map is enormous, so plant your roots somewhere sensible and it turns into an empire.
